New Addition to Kerr Village!
Kerr Street has essentially morphed into Kerr Village in central Oakville, a vibrant community with a welcoming, eclectic vibe that is attracting young families and millennials in droves! It even has its own Kerr Village neighbourhood Facebook page that updates community events and local news. Its urban revitalization is served well by its small town hospitality. There are more independently owned businesses in this neighbourhood than in all of Oakville. Shop owners take the time to get to know their clientele and it is not unusual to be welcomed by your first name as you come through their doors. The dining options also illustrate the community’s diversity. Aromatic coffee shops, ethnic eateries, bakeries, specialty food shops and both casual and fine dining are offered.
Three curated outdoor markets offering everything from collectibles to handcrafted items will be set up at Westside Drive and Kerr street on the following Saturdays this summer – June 09th, July 14th and August 11, 2018.
This September, the southern part of Kerr Village will welcome the newly constructed Trafalgar Park Community Centre which has incorporated the historic Oakville Arena, with its distinctive wooden truss roof, within its design. This new 65,000 square foot community hub will include an NHL-size ice pad, a fitness centre, a full-size gymnasium, an indoor running track, a new seniors’ centre and public meeting space. The adjacent Trafalgar Park will feature a fully accessible playground with a shade structure and a double tennis court that will be converted into an artificial outdoor rink in the winter months. This new community centre will be a popular gathering place for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
The Town of Oakville has selected artist Laura Marotta to create a permanent outdoor sculpture to be installed at the north entrance of the new community centre. With its polished stainless steel surfaces and geometric lines, this unique art installation is designed to be a social hub that invites exploration. It will be unveiled at the grand opening in September 2018.
In addition, a new Fire Hall is also being built on the northwest corner of Kerr and Rebecca Streets. It will include a Heritage Room with interactive displays, public education materials, historic artifacts and the town’s vintage 1948 pumper truck will be on permanent display. It is expected to open this June and will replace the Fire Hall currently located at Navy and Rebecca Streets.
