Random Acts of Kindness Day

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch,

Leo Buscaglia’s words perfectly sum up the concept behind ‘Random Acts of Kindness’. It is possible for the smallest act to make the biggest impact. Random Acts of Kindness Day was founded in Denver, Colorado in 1995 and it is now celebrated in various countries worldwide.

February 17^th, 2019 is the designated date this year with many individuals and organizations electing to extend the concept. Alex Irish & Associates launched their month long ‘Kindness Tour’ in February, 2017. Over the course of 28 days they were privileged to touch many people’s lives through a variety of kind gestures. Positive feedback inspired the decision to make their “Kindness Tour’ an annual event!

The idea behind this day is to make the world a better place, one kind act at a time. Research has shown that the very act of doing something nice for another person is good for the endorphins and mood-enhancing!

Here are some ideas of things to do this February 17^th! Pay it backward by buying a coffee for the person behind you in line at your favourite Starbucks or Tim Hortons. Smile and say hello to the next person you pass walking down the street. Email a former teacher who made a difference in your life. Compliment a colleague. Donate old towels or blankets to your local animal shelter. Surprise a neighbor with home baked goods. Write a positive comment on a friend’s social media. Find opportunities to give compliments, they are ‘free’ and could make someone’s day! Leave a friendly server the biggest tip you can afford. There are so many creative ways one can spread a little kindness!
